INTERNET INFRASTRUCTURE

Existing:-

Internet Backbone:

  1. 10mbps Thicknet layout from Central Cabin to Chemical Block through

i. Electrical Department, ii. Architecture Block/PG,  iii. Production Block

  1. Structural Cabling to all departments in Main building

  2. Thicknet cabkling to Central Library

  3. Fibre Optic Network for 

i.        Workshop block (CAD/CAM lab and High Voltage Lab)

ii.       Ladies Hostel

Internet connection currently available:

  1. 64kbps Leased line

  2. 128 kbps ISDN

  Requirement:-

  1. Upgradation of leased line bandwidth from 64kbps to mbps
  2. Retain the 64kbps leased line
  3. Setting up of a Web Server and Mail server (comment:- in a single machine both can be done)
  4. A Mail server software (comment:- If Linux, not required)
  5. A Proxy server software (comment:- If Linux, not required)
  6. Digital Library
  7. Anti-Virus/Anti-Spam/Anti-Spyware software (client side)
  8. Hostel Integration
  9. Proxy server + Intranet server

Budget:

As per the actual requirement.

Proposal and work out are collected from

1. Asianet Satellite Communications Ltd. For Leased line 2mbps

2. BSNL Kollam for (i) 2mbps, (ii) 256 kbps ISDN and (iii) Scalable MLLN connection

Quote of Asianet

Rs 7,20,000/- + 10.2% Service tax per annum for 1:4 leased line. They assured a maximum 2mbps and minimum 515kbps bandwidth.

(Comment from George Varghese, TAGA Member, who attended the meeting:- We should consider cheaper alternatives. Pls consider collaborating with Reliance/Bharathi/BPL who has transmission towers nearby)

Workout of BSNL

  1. Rs 15,64,151/- including service tax @ 10.2% + Rs 28,246/- for line rent, per annum, for exclusive 2 mbps leased line
  2. Rs 6,000/- per month for ISDN 24 hours 256kbps connection.
  3. Scalable MLLN for a speed of 2mbps at peak time, 512 kbps at evening and 64kbps in the night (Scalable bandwidth) cost approximately 8 lakhs. But it will take another three to six months.

  Recurring expenditure for 64kbps LL and ISDN connections Rs 2.6 lakhs per annum.

  All expenses mentioned above are recurring. 

Please note that the DIAS and DATA One broadband connections, offering by BSNL, are not possible within Karikode exchange right now. (comment:- not exchange, but RSU, remote switching unit)

SERVER:

An IBM or HP higher end server may cost between 1.75 to 2 lakhs rupees.

SOFTWARE:

A Mail Server package cost between Rs 55,000/- to Rs 1,50,000/- for moderate use.

A proxy server cost between Rs 65,000/- to 1,25,000/- for connectivity of 50 to 100 machines.

Anti-virus package network version (Norton version 9.0) cost Rs. 3000/- plus client licent @ Rs 1200/- per machine.
